Mr Sey was "a painter and decorator with a wholesale and retail paperhanging warehouse, also a varnish, colour and glass merchant". His clients included the Earl of Onslow, Governor of New Zealand 1889-1892, and George Stead (1841-1908) of Strowan in Papanui Road
