The firm was founded in Lyttelton by Tippetts, Silk and Heywood in June 1851 and was able to boast in 1898 that it was the only firm in Canterbury whose business had continued since the earliest days of settlement. In 1860 Mr Heywood built the Steam Wharf on Ferry Road
