Cave Rock and the Sumner pier are shown on the left. On the right is Mrs Rule's Hotel. Mary Ann Rule, nee Day (b. 1875) bought the land and built the hotel in 1875. It was called Mrs Rule's Boarding House until she obtained a licence and it was then known as Mrs Rule's Hotel, then Rule's Cave Rock Hotel and later just Cave Rock Hotel until it was demolished in 1997 to make way for an apartment block. Also on the right is the house belonging to Edwin Coxhead Mouldey (1842-1925), known as the Beach House. In the foreground is the white steam tram bridge built in 1887. It was replaced by the black electric tram bridge in 1907. The last electric tram ran in 1953. The area to the right of the bridge was later filled in, becoming the Clifton Bay Reserve.
