A bit of old Christchurch : opening the boating season in 1875.
[1875]
Gibb, John, 1831-1909.
This photograph, which is of a painting by John Gibb (1831-1909), shows oarsmen on the Avon River awaiting the opening of the boating season in 1875. For many years this was the major social event of the time. "This view is taken from about the corner of Windsor Terrace, where Mr Bowron's house used to stand. On the right we see Rees's former boatsheds, next to Mr Steel's house, since added to, then the various buildings of Ward's brewery, including the old matlhouse (on the left). The old daisy-paddock on the left bank is now roads and houses, the point on the opposite bank has been cut away, and both banks are much more defined. But perhaps the most conspicuous change is in the number of people, the crowds at last week's opening covering both banks from Windsor Terrace to Stanmore Bridge." -- The weekly press.
