This triangle of land was donated to the city by William Barbour Wilson (1819-1897), a nurseryman and first mayor of Christchurch. The fountain was demolished in Nov. 1965. It had been allowed to stand dry after it had leaked, flooding a nearby basement, and needed major repairs. There was some public concern about its removal. Some people wanted it preserved, others suggested it be set up elsewhere and others asked whether it was for sale. Work on redevelopment of the triangle had been going on for some time and provided for a drinking fountain, pedestrian space, a tree, raised flower beds and seating. See The Press, 31 July 1965, p. 14.
