Shown is the inspection of some of the horses volunteered for service in the South African War (1899-1900). Trooper Hodson of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles rode every horse bareback. Some of the buildings shown from the left are: George Treleaven & Co., produce merchants, Thos. Hamilton, blacksmith, and W. Hayward & Co., livery stable keepers (the Rink Stables). At the corner of Armagh Street and Oxford Terrace was the office of the Fendalton Brewery Co. The Armagh Street bridge and the Provincial Council offices are in the background. On the right is Victoria Square
