[1907]

"A representative meeting of the Ngai Tahu tribe, the original owners of the South Island, is being held at Arowhenua Pa, for the purpose of discussing their claims against the Crown in respect to land under the deeds of sale known as Kemp's Purchase, Otago Purchase and Murihiku Purchase, comprising in all over 30,000,000 acres, practically the whole of the Canterbury, Otago, and Southland provinces. The natives claim that the land passed to the Crown for the sum of £5000 with the proviso that certain large areas would be set aside for them and their heirs. The purchases were made as far back as 1848 " -- The weekly press
