The Cashmere Sanatorium, Port Hills, Christchurch
[1930]
This hospital, which officially opened on 3 June 1914, treated patients with tuberculosis and was four separate institutions in one. On the lowest level was the King George V Coronation Memorial Hospital which treated more advanced cases. Next was the Middle Hospital which admitted only women and was in the form of small detached huts holding only one or two patients. Next came the Upper Sanitorium which was orginally built for soldiers but later admitted civilians. On the highest level was the Fresh Air Home for Children where children whose parents had the disease stayed. In the 1990s Fulton Hogan Ltd bought the site from the Canterbury Area Health Board and developed one of the largest subdivisions ever in Christchurch
