In 1863 John Etherden Coker (1832-1894) opened The Commercial and Dining Rooms in Cathedral Square. Warner was the third owner of this hotel. He took over the business in 1874 and from 1875 it was known as Warner's Hotel. Warner was known as a man with a very jovial demeanour with an extensive stock of yarns. He was accidentally drowned in the sea near New Brighton in 1896
