A new coalfield.
Caption: A new coalfield. On August 25, a number of Christchurch residents visited a spot about five miles and a half from Coalgate, where, it is reported there are large seams of coal. Several drives have been made into the hill that contains the deposits. The drive shown above runs 87 feet into the hill, and, it is stated, crosses a 16 feet seam which reaches along the face of the hill, and other seams of a depth of 21 inches, 2 feet, 3 inches, and 4 feet 7 inches.
