Caption: The old Bealey Hotel, photographed about the time of the Christchurch Exhibition. 1882. Mr O’Malley, the landlord, is seen behind the two leaders of the coach team on the left which is facing towards Christchurch. The driver is the famous Arthur Davies - note his tall conical hat. The coach on the right, with three leaders, was driven by Tommy Maher, who is seen standing holding his coat together. The original building was on the left portion with BA on it. Mr O’Malley says the BA was there when he took possession, and he disclaims responsibility for the missing R. Further additions were made as the tourist traffic grew, and eventually it became a two-storeyed building, which met its fate by fire about five years ago.
