Description: Rev. Father John Claudius Chervier was born at Lyons, France in 1833 and died in 1901 at Leeston. In 1861, he was based at Shand's Track, then known as New Headford and his parish embraced all the country between the Rangitata and Hurunui rivers and inland as far as the boundary between Canterbury and Westland. About 1878 he moved to Leeston as the first resident priest in the district. He was appointed Dean in honour of his services.
