Description: A movement promoting kinship among children of the British Empire was started by the British Empire League in Australia. Lincoln District High School (primary and secondary) was the first in Canterbury to take part in the exchange of flags with school children of the 'Homeland'. Refer to the article (The Canterbury times, 28 July 1909) in the "Military and Naval" section entitled "Bonding the empire. An exchange of flags. Ceremony at Lincoln." The flag was unfurled by Lieutenant-Colonel R. H. Rhodes. As it spread out in the breeze a verse of the National Anthem was sung and hearty cheers were given.
