The progress of construction works on the Midland Railway.

Caption: The progress of construction works on the Midland Railway. Good progress is being made in the construction of the Midland Railway, and work is being carried on all along the line of the uncompleted portion, right up to the tunnel mouth. The Waimakariri Bridge is practically completed and cutting and embankments along the foot of the range across the river are nearly ready for the rails. The small bridge over the Mingha is being constructed, and that over the Bealey at the eastern portal is nearly finished. The contractors have a steam shovel at work on the high embankment leading to the river, while a heavy steam crane is doing good service across the Bealey, in procuring great rocks for the embankments in the bed of the stream. By the end of the year there should be little left to complete. The following information refers to the illustrations: - (1) The line of the bed of the Waimakariri, between Cass and Goldney’s Saddle Road, showing the protective groins. (2) The line passing the Waimakariri cutting, near the bridge. (3) The bridge over the Waimakariri. Over the river, the railway bends to the left and runs along the foot of the range in the distance. (4) The steam shovel at work on the Bealey embankment. (5) A scene near the western portal of the tunnel. (6) A 100 horse-power electric locomotive at the western portal.
