Work progressing on the Carlton Mill Road, Christchurch

"This photograph shows the east end of the Carlton Mill Road in the widening, and part of the old retaining wall erected in 1889 by Wm Stocks, contractor. " The road was formed out of a towing path on the north bank of the Avon River and was marked off by Edward Jerningham Wakefield who owned land in the area. The mill which had begun production in 1854 was demolished about this time
