The opening ceremony of the Girls' Hostel, Christchurch Technical College, Sullivan Avenue, Woolston (now Opawa)
[29 Apr. 1913]
"On April 29 the Hon R. H. Rhodes opened the Girls' Hostel established by the Board of Governors of the Christchurch Technical College. The hostel is a large and imposing two-storey brick building, with black and white facings. It stands in a block of land at Woolston containing eleven acres, which have been laid out in lawns, gardens, tennis courts and playgrounds. The building has been finished artistically, and is quite up to date in all respects. The approximate cost, including furnishing, was £4850. " The Honourable Robert Heaton Rhodes (1861-1956) is shown speaking at the opening ceremony. At the time he was Postmaster General and Minister of Public Health.
