Gammack emigrated to Canterbury on the Cressy, one of the first four ships. Soon after he travelled to Australia where he made money on the goldfields. He used this to buy farm land in Canterbury and became the biggest property owner at Springston. He was active on the local roads board and school committee and improved his general knowledge and farming skills through extensive reading. He married late and had no family. In his will Gammack left money to friends, relatives and church-based charities. His Springston property has been used to help new farmers gain practical knowledge of their craft and has also provided funds to Christchurch City Libraries. Gammack's intention was that people could better themselves through reading and study as he had done
