Preschool services and resources

Our experienced children’s librarians offer a variety of services and resources. Here are some guides and resources for helping preschool children at different stages in their early learning.

Library events for babies and parents

Attend one of our weekly Wā Pēpi / Babytimes or Wā Kōrero / Storytimes, learn ICT skills with your preschooler or attend a learning party.

Services

Preschool outreach
Our outreach librarians can come to your centre or group — find out more about the services we offer.
Books for Babies
Introduce baby to books, stories and libraries as early as you can with our Books for Babies scheme.
Learning parties / He whakangahau kōrero
If you have a four–year–old, attending or hosting a learning party can help them get ready for school. Learning parties are a new service and complement our Ready for Reading packs that are given to all children at four.
Digital Storytelling Sessions / He wā Kōrero Pakiwaitara Mamati
We provide practical hands on professional development for early childhood centre and library staff.

Resources to encourage young readers

Action rhymes for baby
Can’t make it to BabyTimes this week — why not try it at home? Here are some of our favourite action rhymes to use at home.
Children’s picture books that teach mathematics concepts
Use these fun books to support maths learning.
Science picture books for children
Picture books that introduce scientific concepts.
Dialogic reading
In dialogic reading the adult helps the child become the teller of the story. The adult becomes the listener, the questioner, an audience for the child.
