The BBC's 'Big Read' programme surveyed three quarters of a million UK readers in 2003, asking them to name their best-loved novel. The nation's favourites were then published, with JRR Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings taking first place, Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice in second and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials in third.
