Smart Library technology
The library embraces technology to benefit its customers. An example is the Smart Library technology for checking books in and out.
Smart Library technology
Christchurch City Libraries is installing Smart Library technology which allows library users to check books in and out themselves and ensures more efficient management of library items. Papanui was the first library in the network to go live with the new system. All Christchurch City Libraries will receive the system between 2011 and 2014.
All library items will have identification tags. A tag reader uses radio frequencies to read the tag from various positions rather than requiring each item to be scanned by a laser. It can also read multiple items at once and read through book covers and DVD cases.
What will this mean for you?
- No more queuing at the desk,
- Issues kiosks that are simple to use and can issue up to five items at a time,
- Issue items yourself or ask staff to help you,
- Pay charges at the kiosk using EFT-POS or your Library Account,
- More staff available to help you find exactly what you want faster,
- More space for activities, resources and seating.
