A boy stands by the tram lines along the Sumner road past the Clifton Spur and Shag Rock, Christchurch

The Canterbury Company opened a line to Heathcote Bridge on 9 Dec. 1882 and an extension to Sumner on 1 Nov. 1888. Steam trams were used on the line. The Christchurch Tramway Board electrified the line to Heathcote in Nov. 1905 and further to Sumner on 29 Apr. 1907.
