In the 1930s Ern (Ernest Lawrence) Smith (1887-1952) operated his business from 9 George Street (later Oram Avenue) and he is pictured sitting in one of his trucks. He was also a coal merchant, operated a petrol station selling Plume brand petrol, and was the last mayor of New Brighton, 1935-1941. He is pictured getting into his vehicle which is on the Armagh Street (Park) bridge. Christ's College buildings can be seen in the background. Ern Smith's only son, Ernest Peter Smith, attended Christ's College, 1937-1940
