The rose garden, Botanic Gardens, Christchurch (formerly the Christchurch Domain)
[1924]
James Young (1862-1934), curator of the Gardens from 1908 to 1933, commenced developing the rose garden in 1909. It was based on the garden of the Duchess of Sutherland in Hertfordshire, England. Rectangular in shape, it extended out over most of the central lawn and in the 1930s was considered to be the largest rose garden in Australasia. It was re-formed to its present design in 1936
