Spectators during the ceremony marking the running of the last New Brighton tram before the conversion of the line to bus operation
[18 Oct. 1952]
Some of the crowds who greeted the last tram travelling from Cathedral Square to New Brighton are pictured. Thousands of people filled Seaview Road almost from the bridge to the seafront. Speeches were made by the chairman of the Christchurch Transport Board, the Mayor of Christchurch, Robert Mafeking Macfarlane (1900-1981), Sir Robert Fryars, the head of the company which manufactured the buses and John Mathison (1901-1982), Member of Parliament for Avon. The president of the New Brighton Businessmen's Association, J. L. Boyd, introduced the speakers. See The Press, 20 Oct. 1952, p. 6.
