The Bricks, the first settlement on the Canterbury Plains
The Bricks, the first settlement on the Canterbury Plains
[1851]
At The Bricks was a grass house built by Sydney Scroggs on the south bank of the Avon River, on the town side of the junction of Barbadoes Street and Oxford Terrace. It became home to surveyor Edward Jollie, and Messrs. Durey, Anderson and Inwood lived in houses there too, in the early 1850s, as this picture shows.
