The Latimer Hall
The Latimer Hall
[1966]
"A classical temple, executed entirely in wood, the hall was designed by W.A.P. Clarkson and built in 1892 as the Temple of Truth for a sect founded by an American adventurer. It later became a choral hall, then a dance hall. On its front, six Ionic columns supported a simple pediment: on its side, five small gables, with circular windows in each gable, gave the building a novel aspect when seen from Latimer Square. Although unique in Christchurch, the hall was demolished in 1966 to make way for a new hostel for the Young Women's Christian Association. The empty site has been a carpark ever since.
