Interior of Christchurch Cathedral shown while under construction
[1879]
By August 1876 construction of the Cathedral was well underway and the western wall had risen to the lower edge of the great rose window. However, the funds of the Cathedral Commission were so limited that for two years (1878-1879) it was not possible to let any contract, the work being done by day labour. Progress is shown in this photograph. The Cathedral Guild donated money for the stone work for the rose window and the stained glass was a later gift from Mr and Mrs Leonard Harper. By the end of 1880, after a loan of £50,000 had been floated in London, the walls were complete, the coping stone had been laid on the tower and the roof timbers of the nave were in place
