"After having been administered by the Canterbury University College Council since 1873, the Canterbury Public Library was yesterday handed over to the Christchurch City Council. This photograph, taken during an inspection of the library, shows the librarian, Mr E.J. Bell, with representatives of the City Council and Canterbury College. From left are Mr Bell, Sir Joseph Ward (chairman of the College Council), Mr J. Wyn Irwin (a member of the College Council), Mr H.S. Feast (Town Clerk), and Cr. J.E. Tait (chairman of the City Council's finance committee)."
