Three hundred tons a day was the capacity of this big steam digger shown here working on a part of the Christchurch Drainage Board extension scheme in Church Road, Opawa. The digger was equipped with caterpillar wheels to enable it to work on soft ground. This photograph shows the huge jaws closing on a ton of earth
