St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Hospital corner, Christchurch

This, the first Presbyterian Church in Canterbury, opened on 1 Feb. 1857. In the foreground is a school which was associated with the church, the Boys' Academy, which opened on 15 Nov. 1858. Rev. Charles Fraser (1823-1886), the first minister, was very interested in education. The school was later moved to the site of the present Hagley Community College
