The Theosophical Hall, Cambridge Terrace, Christchurch
[1926]
The Christchurch Lodge of the Theosophical Society was founded in 1894 and public lectures were held regularly to promote its ideas. It was not until 1925 that fund-raising began for a suitable building for its headquarters. Thomas J. Edmonds (1858-1932) was a financial supporter and Cecil Wood (1878-1947) was the architect. At the time of its completion in 1926 the building was described in the caption under this photograph as being a "dignified structure of Georgian design ... situated in pleasant surroundings". A lecture hall at the rear was built to only half its size due to lack of funds
