Caption: Officers of the Red Force. The Red force was composed principally of the mounted troops of Canterbury. Lieutenant-Colonel Chaffey, who was in charge of that force, is the fourth from the right in the sitting group. On his left is Major Bowler (Southland), one of the umpires, and on his right are Colonel Davies (Inspector-General of the New Zealand Forces), who watched the operations, and Lieutenant-Colonel Hawkins (officer commanding the Canterbury Military District).
