Caption: An example of a very successful season: the beekeeper with a hive nearly as high as himself. Note the bees ‘hanging out’. The hive is full of honey: as piled up the supers contain about 270lb, all stored by one colony this season. The hive being absolutely full, the bees have no work to do, and they ‘hang out’ on the alighting board, taking the air and enjoying a well-earned rest. Sometimes in very hot weather bees ‘hang out’ even though the hive is not full, especially if the hive is not well ventilated, as it gets too hot for them.
