Caption: Bridging the Selwyn river, Canterbury. Work has commenced on the construction of the traffic bridge over the Selwyn river on the Main South road. At present the river has to be forded, and when the Selwyn is in flood this necessitates a long detour via Ellesmere. The bridge, when completed, will greatly facilitate road traffic south. Left: Making concrete piles on the site of the new bridge.
