The late Michael King, who died in 2004, was one of New Zealand's leading historians. He was the author of a number of outstanding biographies, including those of Princess Te Puea, Whina Cooper, Janet Frame and Frank Sargeson, and wrote widely on Maori/Pakeha history. He was the author of the bestselling The Penguin Book of New Zealand History.
