Ngā Kete Wānanga o Ōtautahi , Christchurch City Libraries - entry PDF
I am very proud to announce that Ngā Kete Wānanga o Ōtautahi , Christchurch City Libraries was announced the winner of Te Tohu Whare Pukapuka Tāmatanui the Public Library Award in the Central Government, Local Body and Public Library category of the Māori Language Week Awards 2005.
Richard Tankersley who stood in for our Kaumatua Dr Terry Ryan and I attended the Māori Language Week Awards dinner on Wednesday 14 September in the Boatshed on Wellington's waterfront. It was a very grand occasion, and we dined and rubbed shoulders with some very influential people including the Māori Queen, Te Atairangikaahu. It was a formal occasion and everyone looked gorgeous in their evening attire, lots of champagne, oysters, crayfish, sparkles and bow ties.
We sat at the Ngāi Tahu table with the team from Te Waka Reo, the Ngāi Tahu Language Unit.
This is the second year we have won this award and it would not have been possible with out the efforts and enthusiasm of all our colleagues who help to make our programme of events so successful. Our new Māori language version of the membership brochure was featured, along with Whariki Matariki the beautiful woven mat that was made for the Parklands Library, and thanks to the creative skill of our Kaitakawaenga, Sonya Peters, our stunning poster which featured a close-up of one the tukutuku panels in the Nga Pounamu Maori centre was also admired. Check out our Māori language week website to see our programme of events and the poster
Our award is stunning and it is on display in the cabinet in the Nga Pounamu Maori Centre on the 2nd floor of the Central Library for everyone to see.
