Welcome to the Christchurch City Libraries’ newsletter

2014 marks 100 years since the start of the First World War and Christchurch City Libraries is helping to commemorate the event. The annual Photo Hunt is back with the theme - Making Connections: Experiencing our past - present - future. We also look at the WORD Christchurch Writers and Readers Festival, a book sale for children and SmartMaths, our latest electronic resource.

Commemorating the First World War

This year marks 100 years since the start of the First World War. WW100 is a programme set up to mark the centenary and Christchurch City Libraries is joining in the commemoration with resources on the war including images and photographs, blog posts and our digital collections as well as postcards available in our libraries. Canterbury 100 is a collaborative project, co–ordinated by the region’s major cultural and heritage institutions, telling the story and experiences of Canterbury people during the First World War.

Making Connections: Experience our past - present - future.
Dust off the family albums and do your bit to preserve the region’s heritage and be in line to win great prizes by entering the Christchurch City Libraries annual Photo Hunt. Images can be from any era, depicting any facet of Christchurch’s growth, development, social life or events in the city’s past and present.

Entries open Monday, 29 September 2014 and close 5pm 31 October. Winners announced on 28 November 2014.

WORD Writers and Readers Festival

WORD Christchurch Writers and Readers Festival

The WORD Christchurch Writers and Readers Festival was a celebration of words and ideas. The festival included over 100 guests from around the world including NoViolet Bulawayo, Jackie French, and Kiwis like Eleanor Catton, Nicky Hager and Elizabeth Knox.

Children's Book Sale

Come along to Fendalton Library on Thursday and Friday, 2-3 October for the Children's Book Sale. There are plenty of ex-Library books to choose from to keep the children entertained for hours!

Britannica SmartMaths Practice is an interactive and fun way for those aged 6-14 to improve their maths skills with activities, tests and quizzes.

Mango provides access to over sixty languages for those wanting to learn a language from basic right through to advanced levels with grammar and cultural notes.

Askews eBooks

Access a free eBook service of fiction and non–fiction titles. This collection of eBooks focuses on British titles. 

Freegal Music

Freegal is a service that lets you legally download and keep music MP3s and music videos MP4s from the Sony Music catalogue. Download up to three songs per week.

Wheelers eBooks

Access a free eBook service of fiction and non–fiction titles. This collection focuses mainly on New Zealand titles.
