House brought from England by Rev. Charles Richard Mackie (1798-1882)

Rev. Charles Mackie arrived on the Duke of Portland in October 1852, bringing with him a house in sections. He bought a ten-acre block and erected the house on a site in Cashel Street, naming it Strickland. He became the first vicar of Avonside and used the house as the vicarage. In Jan. 1863 he returned to England. Later the house became the laundry for the House of Refuge for young unmarried women, which opened in 1876 and 1918 became Essex Home. It was demolished in the 1980s?
