[22 June 1911]

Florence Ethel Beswick was the wife of Harry Joseph Beswick (1860-1934), mayor of Christchurch in 1896 and chairman of the Christchurch Domains Board for many years. The avenue of lime trees in the Botanic Gardens planted in 1917 is named Beswick's Walk after him. The oak was planted to commemorate the coronation of Kign George V (1865-1936) on 22 June 1911 and is near the oak planted in 1863 to commemorate the marriage of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Florence Beswick was a daughter of one of New Zealand's greatest shipping magnates, Sir James Mills. The Beswicks retired to and later died in England.
