The Ngai Tahu land claims : a South Island hui : Maori gathering at Tuahiwi, North Canterbury.

A great Maori hui, attended by 300 Maori from all over New Zealand, was held at Tuahiwi, near Kaiapoi, where the Native Land Court met on 23 Jan. 1925 to hear claims of "natives " who wished to share in the grant of £354,000 to be made by the Government. This would be compensation for the sale of the greater part of the South Island in 1848 for the sum of £2,000. The arrival of Chief Judge Robert Noble Jones, President of the Native Land Court, was the occasion of a "demonstrative welcome" by the assembled Maori.
