Heritage weekHeritage Week, 13 - 23 October 2006

Heritage Week is an annual event in October, core funded by the Christchurch City Council, with support from local sponsors including principal sponsor Philip Carter.

New Zealand International Exhibition 1906

This year is the anniversary of the New Zealand International Exhibition held in Christchurch 1906-7 which showcased art and culture from around the world and had nearly 2 million visitors.

Decra Art Ltd Spirited Cemetery Tours

Join Richard Greenaway, Christchurch City Libraries genealogy librarian, in his tours of various historical cemeteries with biographical details of some of the people buried in the graveyards. Each tour is preceded by a sausage sizzle.

Tours are free of charge. There is a small charge for sausage sizzle and Cemetery Tour booklets. Phone 941 7923 for information.

Kids on bikesKids of Yesteryear

New Brighton Library is celebrating Heritage Week with displays of our local history collection including Kids of Yesteryear Display - in the Children's area of the library. Old fashioned toys - dolls, train sets, books, marbles, hoops, game sets - as well as school equipment of days gone by are part of this display highlighting what life was like for children in days gone by. The display is accompanied by historic photos of children in the New Brighton area, from the library's photographic archive.

Finding family and local history through library resources

Talk and data demonstration show. Staff from the Aotearoa New Zealand Centre, Central Library, will introduce us to the rich array of heritage resources and services available through Christchurch City Libraries and the library web pages. It’s free and everyone is welcome.

Researching and Documenting your Family Roots

Are there skeletons in your family closet? This course will introduce you to a range of helpful local, national and international websites and to reference material available in the library. Learn how to use a home computer to record and collate material. Basic computer skills required.

Digitise Your Histories A Beginners Guide

Preserve and enhance your heritage story by producing a simple digital presentation. You can transform loose photographs showing the history of your family, neighbourhood or home by scanning these and other memorabilia into digital images able to be used on the computer.

  • Suitable for Adults with basic computer skills.

Quilt from 2006 ExhibitionInspiration for Quilters

Check out quilting websites for patterns, quilters stories, fabrics and techniques. Design your own template design and colour scheme, using tessellation sketch pad. Take home the colour printed design to form your unique pattern. See demonstrations and an inspiring quilt display.
