Christchurch City Libraries celebrates New Zealand Music Month during May. We have a wide range of free music events, heaps of great music resources, and we're also presenting the Acoustic Stage at CHARTFEST on 23 May, supporting local music and musicians.

See our weekly edition for more details of how we're celebrating NZ Music Month this year. Ready for Music Month, we've also launched NAXOS, which gives library members free access to thousands of streaming music tracks online, including classical, world, jazz, folk and contemporary music.

WiniPod Touch

You can also take part in our promotion to win an Apple iPod Touch 32GB valued at $749 RRP. There are two ways to be in to win:

  • Give us your opinion about music at the library by completing our short web survey. All completed entries go in the draw.
  • Borrow 3 Music CDs and get the 4th free. Pick up a loyalty card from any of our libraries, or print one here and we'll give you a bonus stamp, so you only need to borrow 2 to get 1 free.

About NZ Music Month

New Zealand Music Month was first celebrated in 2001. In that May, only 6% of album sales for the month were by New Zealand acts. Aiming to boost homegrown music, the initiative gave NZ media a chance to showcase local talent. After five years, homegrown acts made up 29% of albums sold, and there was similar increase in radio airplay. In the last couple of years, the month has started to become a truly national celebration, with the public encouraged to show their support through attending events, buying music and wearing the T-shirt.

NZ Music Month is a partnership between the NZ Music Commission and a number of other organisations including songwriters' association APRA, Independent Music NZ, NZ On Air, the Radio Broadcasters Association and the Recording Industry Association of NZ. Christchurch City Libraries has supported the initiative for several years.
