Story tram 2003
Stories on the Tram go round and round
On Monday 7 April 2003 the historic Christchurch Tramway was host to Storyteller Liz Weir and around 150 preschoolers and parents/caregivers. A special guest on the Tram was Sally the Story Snake who helped Liz Weir entertain and delight the children and adults alike with New Zealand stories, rhymes and songs.
The "Story Tram" was part of Christchurch City Libraries' celebration of the New Zealand Post Children's Book Festival. Two half hour circuits were made departing from the Square at 10 am and 10.30 am. "This is the third year we have had the Story Tram as part of the Festival and it is always overwhelmingly popular." said Louise Easter, Centre for the Child Librarian. The tram driver enjoyed the novelty of the Story Tram as well - ringing the bell in time with the stories and songs.
Not only was the tram a new experience for many, but storytelling is not like storyreading. When Liz Weir tells a story there is not a book in sight, she acts the stories out.
Liz Weir also performs at various Christchurch City Libraries during the year. These events are free for children and their caregivers. Check out our events page for upcoming events and story readings.
