The Māori name for the Bishopdale area, Papa Kohatu, means land of rocks. Before the construction of stopbanks, Bishopdale was the floodplain for the Waimairi river and was regularly flooded with rocks and shingle as floods receded. Thus, the name is a descriptive one that reminds people of the power of the natural elements. This concept is central to the tukutuku panel with the three river staircases winding through the triangle rocks in the lower section. Across the centre, rock formations representing the Southern Alps are shown in white and grey. The twelve stars across the top of the panel represent each staff member of the Bishopdale Library team who had input into the design and making of the panel.
