In Centre for the Child we have a wide and varied age group of children who come through our door. The programmes we provide can be fun, educational and enjoyable both for children and the librarians who provide the services.

Through our Tukutuku panel hopefully we have captured the essence of the partnership between iwi and Library in the literacy, growth and development of our tamariki. The richness of the beautiful Canterbury plains and the bounty from the rivers contribute to the wealth and well being of the city.

The poutama (stairway) represents knowledge, aspirations and growth.

Kaokao (chevron pattern) represents the strength and power of the river.

The seven stars in the left-hand corner represents Matariki and are set amongst the purapurawhetu pattern which represents ancestors and iwi. This design was suggested and worked by members of the public.

The panels of different stitches represent the Canterbury Plains.
