Popular team 150 tukutuku panel
This panel was designed, created and constructed by the Popular team, as part of the Tukutuku project in 2009 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Christchurch City Libraries.
Rongonui – Heart Soul Spirit
- Chiffon and satin ribbon, red heart with stylised S; flowers and hearts constructed of withdrawn books, donated buttons and other ‘found objects’; old genre labels and stickers; paua and glitter on river; all on black background.
- 122 x 60 cm
The Avon river flows through all the Central library panels, uniting the different teams. Our panel is further embellished with a lustrous fabric red heart which signifies the Popular Team’s role to nourish the hearts and souls of Central library’s customers and staff.
The stylised S-shape running behind the heart stands for soul and spirit, and also represents a treble clef, referencing our music collection.
We’ve used cancelled book stock to create hearts and flowers with donated buttons and beads: a floral motif was chosen as many team members and customers are avid gardeners; it also reflects our physical proximity to the banks of the Avon and Victoria Square. A final finishing touch has been the inclusion of genre and location labels unique to the fiction collection.
