- Ngati Toa under Te Rauparaha capture Kaiapohia Pa. Only 200 of the 1000 Ngāi Tahu inhabitants escape the ensuing massacre by the musket-armed attackers.
- Fortress on Onawe Peninsula in Akaroa Harbour captured by Te Rauparaha. The defenders are massacred. As a result of these massacres and the earlier civil war, the Māori population in Canterbury is reduced to only about 500 people.
