Mrs Stead was the widow of George Gatonby Stead (1841-1908), grain merchant, racehorse owner and breeder and businessman. He married Lucie Wilkinson in 1876 and they were to have three sons and one daughter. They bought Strowan on Papanui Road in 1890 and developed it into one of the finest properties in Christchurch
