Dr John Seager Gundry (1807-1886), ship's surgeon and Canterbury colonist
[185-]
Dr Gundry emigrated to Canterbury on the Canterbury Association vessel Steadfast which arrived in Lyttelton on 8 June 1851. He had been Surgeon-Superintendent on board. He bought his town allotment section on the south side of Cashel Street, about halfway between Colombo Street and Oxford Terrace, and a house was built for him there. In 1852 he was a member of the large committee which gathered to farewell the Godleys from Canterbury and in 1855 he stood unsuccessfully at the parliamentary election. He and his family returned to England in October 1858 where he took holy orders and became vicar of Honiton, Devon. This illustration is in an article on the jubilee of the St Augustine Lodge of which he was a founding member.
