In 1928 James Jamieson bequeathed his art collection to Christchurch on condition that the city immediately build a gallery to house it. The managing director of Aulsebrook's, Robert McDougall, donated the cost and Gisborne architect Edward Armstrong won the competition for its design. The Gallery was completed in 1932
